God Knows Who You Are and Who You Are Going To Be
Not only was God involved in making you who you are, but in verse 16, God has already written down everything you are going to do in your life time. He already has a list of your victories and defeats.
One of God’s greatest characteristics is that He is all-knowing (omniscient), so of course He already knows who you are and who you are going to be. There is nothing that you will do in your life time that God doesn’t already know about and has already written down in His book. We often think that when we do something wrong or harmful to someone else and no one is around to see us, we are in the clear. However, we see that’s not true, because God knew you were going to do it before you did.
Do you really understand how much God loves you? Look at verse 17; He loves you so much that He thinks about you all of the time. In fact, if you tried to count the number of times God thought about you they would outnumber all of the grains of sand on the earth.
So you can see you are indeed very special to God. If God pays that much attention to making each of us, it is only common sense that He has a very special purpose for you and me on this earth.
What happened then, you’re asking? If man and woman were created perfect and without sin, why am I not perfect and without sin? In our next installment of “Who Am I Really?” we’ll take a look at what happened as we are introduced to the next character of the Bible, Satan. Let’s find out what that is together.
Until next time, my friend, may Mercy, Peace and Love be multiplied to you.
When you say that God knows everything about us–all that we will do in the future–how much of our action does He really know? Does He know literally every single thing: where we will spend our time, who we will spend our days with, etc? Or does He simply know the big things: if we will marry, how many children we will have, where we will live and work? And if He knows everything about us and has a plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11), how much does our free will really play into our lives? Is our free will not really free will at all because God knows everything that we will do?
Marisa, thank you for your comments! First, we need to remember that God is omniscient, meaning He knows everything (look at the comparison chart between God and Satan in Lesson 2). And at the beginning of Psalm 139, we will find further proof of God
Marisa
So nice to hear from you, thank you for your questions. These question deal with understanding who you truly are. I’m going to break your questions into two parts. They both truly work together, but let’s take each one separately then I’ll show you how they work together.
1. Does the Lord God of the Universe know all about me, and everything I do or say?
2. If He does know everything and my life is planned out for me. What good is the free will in my life?
Does the Lord God of the Universe know all about me, and everything I do or say?
Marisa, there are three things you need to understand about God.
1. He is Omnipotent. He has all power over all things at all times and in all ways.
2. He is Omniscient. He knows everything.
3. He is Omnipresent He is present everywhere at all times.
So, if He knows everything, has power or control over everything, and is everywhere at all times. The answer to the first question is yes, He knows everything about you, past, present and future. Psalm 139 is the best Scripture to refer to when trying to understand who you are.
You truly are the marvelous creation of God.
139 LORD, you have tested me, so you know all about me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts from far away.
3 You know where I go and where I lie down. You know everything I do.
4 LORD, you know what I want to say, even before the words leave my mouth.
5 You are all around me—in front of me and behind me. I feel your hand on my shoulder.
6 I am amazed at what you know; it is too much for me to understand.
7 Your Spirit is everywhere I go. I cannot escape your presence.
8 If I go up to heaven, you will be there. If I go down to the place of death, you will be there.
9 If I go east where the sun rises or go to live in the west beyond the sea,
10 even there you will take my hand and lead me. Your strong right hand will protect me.
11 Suppose I wanted to hide from you and said, “Surely the darkness will hide me. The day will change to night and cover me.”
12 Even the darkness is not dark to you. The night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are the same.
13 You formed the way I think and feel. You put me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because you made me in such a wonderful way. I know how amazing that was!
15 You could see my bones grow as my body took shape, hidden in my mother’s womb.
16 You could see my body grow each passing day. You listed all my parts, and not one of them was missing.
17 Your thoughts are beyond my understanding. They cannot be measured!
18 If I could count them, they would be more than all the grains of sand.
But when I finished, I would have just begun. (ERV)
Marisa, God knows exactly what you do, what you think, what you will say before you say it, if you will get married and have children, where you will live, who your friends will be, what you will have for dinner tonight, who you’re angry with, what kind of music you listen to, what T.V. shows you watch and even how much money you have in your wallet.
This is what makes Jeremiah 29:11-13 so wonderful.
11 For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 You will find me when you seek me, if you look for me in earnest. Jeremiah 29:11-13 (TLB)
Think about it Marisa. You have a God that loves you so much that He personally watches over you 24/7 and cares dearly for you.
Does that mean then you are simply a robot doing exactly what He wants?
If He does know everything and my life is planned out for me. What good is the free will in my life?
No Marisa, it does not mean you’re a robot with no free will. God created you and me in His own image, and that included the ability to choose. When God made Adam and Eve, they were perfect. Like the angels, he gave them a free will giving them the ability to choose between right and wrong, good, or evil. That was Satan’s down fall. He chose to do evil by wanting to become like God himself.
However, free will does not mean that you can do anything you please. Your choices are limited to what is in keeping with our nature (natural abilities). For example, you may choose to walk across a bridge or not to walk across it. What you can’t do is choose to fly over the bridge—your nature prevents you because you can’t fly. So, free will is limited by nature.
This limitation does not diminish our accountability. The Bible is clear that we not only have the ability to choose, we also have the responsibility to choose wisely. Our motives, desires, and actions are voluntary, and we are rightly held responsible for them.
As Jeremiah told us, God has a wonderful plan for your life. As a child of God, seek after and follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, and you will have a wonderful life.
24 The very steps we take come from GOD; otherwise, how would we know where we’re going Proverbs 20:24 (MSG)
Marisa, here’s is the problem with our free will. It is called Sin. Our old nature will continue to try to influence your life and your decisions until you leave this earth.
Satan oversees the world we live in, so he works day and night to temp you to sin against God. He has provided us a world full of sinful pleasure to distract us from the very steps God wants us to take.
So, as you walk through life making decision as to what you will do, you will always have two choses. Like Adam and Eve, you can either chose good for your life or evil. God will always let you decide. But remember God will also hold you responsible for them.
I understand that it is not easy to make the right decision every time. Often, we chose to follow the recommendations of our Old Nature. I’ve done that more times than I like to think about. However, we have a Wonderfully Glorious God that will forgive us of the sins we’ve committed.
9 But if we confess our sins to him, he can be depended on to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. And it is perfectly proper for God to do this for us because Christ died to wash away our sins. 1 John 1:9 (TLB)
So, Marisa God knows everything about you, down to the smallest detail, and this is a wonderful thing to know. Who other than a loving Heavenly Father would you want to know all of this information about you? Someone who has nothing but plans for good and not for evil, plans that give you a future and a hope.
So, Marisa in closing my recommendation to you is.
5 Trust the LORD completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. 6 With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ERV)
Thank you, my friend, for your question. I pray that this will help you in your believers walk through life. May His mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you.
Your Brother in Christ
